Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Responsible for the daily golf course set-up and initial inspection, using judgment in scheduling and daily course conditioning
- Recruit, hire, interview, direct, review and communicate with all maintenance personnel
- Administrative duties: evaluate daily labor records; schedule and conduct safety and staff meetings; initiate equipment schedules; control inventory of chemicals, irrigation and fertilizer; initiate purchase requisitions for golf course supplies including accessories, fertilizers, chemicals and topdressing; assist with budget preparations
- Train new and existing employees in job function, equipment operation, guest service standards and departmental information
- Evaluate the usage and application of fertilizer, chemical and seeding applications
- Perform final daily course evaluation/inspection
- Supervise irrigation and irrigation maintenance, and maintenance for shop area and clubhouse grounds
- Develop and administer horticultural programs for course surfaces (greens, traps, tees, fairways), surrounding bodies of water, trees and surrounding areas
- Interact with outside contractors, vendors, visitors, county and state agencies
- Maintain records of all work undertaken by maintenance, including maintenance, pesticide application, as well as plans, “specs,” blueprints and drawings
- Track and maintain expense records for course equipment, supplies and labor, as well as current inventory of equipment, maintenance schedules and replacement needs
- Ensure that all equipment is used safely and correctly, and not abused
- Maintain security of golf course property and buildings
- Manage customer and Regional Manager communications relating to course maintenance and procedures
- Create monthly course condition reports and newsletters and transmit electronically to Regional Manager and Home Office in accordance with monthly reporting schedule
- Record payroll data into electronic timesheet and transmit in accordance with payroll reporting schedule; review for accuracy and tracking of payroll data to meet budgetary directives
- Other duties assigned by Regional Manager
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Manage one subordinate supervisor who supervises in the Maintenance Department, and provide the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of this unit. Also directly supervise one non-supervisory employee, the equipment technician. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Education and/or Experience:

Four years’ experience in golf course maintenance operation, including one year as an assistant superintendent required. Knowledge of irrigation systems, fertilizer application and chemical related applications, damage control methods. Continuing education classes related to golf course maintenance required. Ability to schedule and supervise maintenance staff members to achieve the most efficient utilization of staff members and equipment. Prepare clear and concise report required. Intermediate computer skills are required for record keeping and irrigation system management.
Language Skills:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence, take inventories, and create budgets. Ability to effectively present information to top management, and/or board of directors.

- Assume all responsibilities of the golf course superintendent in his/her absence
- Supervision of staff
- Monitoring of daily maintenance operations
- Organize and delegate daily work schedules as well as projected work
- Direct the activities of the crew; participate in disciplinary procedures as outlined in the company handbook and make recommendations to the superintendent for termination.
- Conduct interviews with prospective employees and make recommendations for new hires
- Assist the superintendent in preparing the operation budget and analyzing the expense forecast to ensure that expenditures are maintained within budgetary guidelines.
- Maintain security of golf course property and buildings
- Update superintendent daily on all aspects of the maintenance department projects, personnel issues, equipment problems and other concerns requiring attention
- Make recommendations to the superintendent on vehicle and equipment repairs
- Assist in the establishment of training programs to effectively produce a top quality product while maintaining good, harmonious working relationships; training must include equipment operation, safety and environmental upkeep
- Diagnose and solve technical golf course maintenance problems in cooperation with the superintendent

- Under the direction of the Superintendent and/or Assistant Superintendent, spray prescribed amounts of fertilizer, insecticide, herbicide and fungicide, using hoses and truck-mounted tank, taking care not to injure turf or shrubs
- Assist Superintendent with correct calibration of all spray equipment
- Fill sprayer tank with chemicals and water according to formula and direction given by Superintendent and/or Assistant Superintendent
- Maintain daily spray records
- Post notification of any spray applications to members/guests
- Assist in maintaining proper chemical inventory and storage
- Maintain chemical storage and mixing areas in compliance with county, state, and federal regulations
- Perform routine safety inspections of all spraying equipment
- Cut grass, edge, and trim all areas
- Maintain sand traps, change cups and markers, service ball washers, cart paths, and landscape areas
- Clean and maintain rest rooms when needed
- Read, understand, and keep current with all Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)

- Coordinate and schedule all equipment for repairs and/or maintenance
- Inspect, diagnose and repair mechanical defects in golf course maintenance and construction equipment; grind, backlap, set and adjust mowers
- Overhaul and repair automotive and other powered equipment including engines, brakes, transmissions, differentials, springs, and mufflers; secure and replace tools and parts
- Responsible for administrative duties in relation to operation of shop, including purchasing, receiving, vehicle record maintenance, departmental billing, inventory control, safety checklists for equipment; vendor association in terms of bidding and purchase of needed material
- Responsible for oil/gasoline inventories and fuel facility; make sure orders are received, correct, and accounted for
- Assist Superintendent by making recommendations for capital equipment purchase
- Responsible for continuing education of all employees in terms of equipment standards and safety
- Maintain shop in orderly condition, cleaning working areas after repairs are completed
- Fill maintenance equipment with fuel and check fluid levels; inspects, change and repair tires

- Hand water putting greens, tees and fairways
- Grade and prepare a soil planting bed, lay sod; plant vegetative material and seed putting greens, tees, fairways, and roughs
- Change cups and tee markers; fill divots
- Maintain ball washers and water coolers
- Edge cart paths; edge, rake and maintain sand bunkers
- Assist in construction of new greens, tees and fairways by grading, preparing soils and planting
- Operate trucks and other light equipment in hauling materials and removing debris
- Trim trees and shrubbery; cultivate flowers and shrubs
- Lay walks and paths using gravel and asphalt mixes; excavate and backfill ditches and trenches with hand tools; repair and replace pipe on irrigation systems
- Replace tee towels and flags when needed
- Maintain fuel and fluid levels for all types of equipment daily
- Return all equipment to designated location at the maintenance facility; clean maintenance areas
- Mark the course for cart control weekly; move cart control barriers and replace worn or lost ropes and signs; and mark hazard and drop areas

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, outside weather conditions, and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
Must be able to work in temperatures exceeding 90 degrees in the summer and below 20 degrees in the winter.
